Are your team as motivated to win as David was to beat Goliath?

We hear a lot about the importance of motivation; in sports contexts, regarding team building, about sales people and teams, and when we discuss leadership. Well, at Motivated and Competent we know the value of motivated people. One of the key things we do is to help develop motivated teams who can competently and consistently perform their roles, develop as people and take satisfaction from their performance.

Let’s start with some dictionary definitions.

1. Motivation – noun. A reason or reasons for acting or behaving in a particular way; escape can be a motivation for travel.

2. Motivated – adjective. Provided with a motive or given incentive for action; a highly motivated person can learn almost anything.

So a key, focused, question to address is: why can highly motivated individuals achieve almost anything?

Think of your favourite sport. Now think of a few classic and celebrated David v Goliath moments from history. I am prepared to bet that in a high percentage of these ‘upsets’ the team or sportsperson who overcame the odds had many things on their side; better organisation, an effective strategy, they’d done their homework on their opposition, they used psychology to outmanoeuvre their opposite number, they didn’t know when they were beaten, they dug exceptionally deep.

These things all have a common trait; the winner was prepared and / or performed better on the day. Why? They were better motivated! Perhaps they thought the whole event through, visualized their success and everything they needed to do to achieve success. Often this over compensates for other factors such as basic aptitude.

Two more focused questions for you to answer:

1. If you have a team of motivated people what would that mean for you and your team?

2. How can Motivated And Competent help you raise and maintain motivation in your teams of people?

Well, first of all we know that everyone is an individual who will have their own reasons for action. We will make sure that we listen to and understand your team and identify what will motivate them. We also understand the universal frameworks for motivation.

We will discuss with you the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. We will help you apply the realisation that people can be either motivated to move away from a source of discomfort, or towards pleasure. We can talk with you about how to profit from the theories of Frederick Herzberg’s Hygiene and Motivational factors, from Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, and more besides.

In other words – we will help you appropriately motivate your people; and keep them motivated. You will be in control of one of the key factors in driving performance, success and running a profitable, effective organisation.

Most importantly we will make sure that you are able to benefit from this in practice.

Some very practical things we can help you establish are:

  • A sound goal setting methodology
  • An effective performance appraisal system
  • A system for rewarding and acknowledging superior performance – using intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, tangible and intangible rewards
  • A sound motivation system that is aligned to your organisational goals
  • An approach to help managers understand and identify the motivators for all of their team members
  • Ensuring people are treated fairly and justly
  • A sanctions framework for if performance is consistently unsatisfactory
  • A carrot and stick approach to motivate both efficient and inefficient employees. The employees should treat negative consequences (such as fear of punishment) as stick, an outside push and move away from it. They should take positive consequences (such as reward) as carrot, and move towards it
  • Flexibility in your organisation’s working arrangements
  • Participative management styles, and involving people in decision-making processes
  • A motivation system that involve intrinsic and extrinsic rewards
  • A sustainable, effective motivational management approach which encourage supportive supervision where the supervisors share their views and experiences with their subordinates, listen to the subordinates views, and assist the subordinates in performing their roles.
